Mobile and Computing Markets Catapult 60 GHz WiGig into the Mainstream in 2017

The 802.11ad (WiGig) chipset market is set to reach a critical juncture in 2017 when the technology hits higher adoption levels in the mobile and computing space. ABI Research forecasts 180 million WiGig chipsets will ship to the smartphone market in 2017, with smartphone chipsets accounting for almost half of the 1.5 billion total market shipments in 2021. WiGig chipsets significantly enhance Wi-Fi throughput, improve efficiency, and expand product use case potential.

Chip Card Vendors Turn to New Form Factors to Fuel Future Revenue Opportunities in an Established EMV Market

The Chinese and U.S. EMV (Europay-Mastercard-Visa) payment cards markets are experiencing double-digit year-on-year growth, responsible for more than 50% of 2.8 billion EMV cards shipped worldwide. But as the migration phase for these market regions comes to a close, the industry will soon experience a ripple effect driven by a flattening market in China and a dip in U.S. shipments due to overstocking. ABI Research finds the proliferating negative discussions among industry players to be over exaggerated and suggests vendors focus on new card form factors and emerging regions to drive future growth.

Enterprises Prepare for Tidal Wave of New Augmented and Virtual Reality Applications

As new augmented and virtual reality (AR and VR) devices flood the market, ABI Research predicts enterprises will need to prepare for a tidal wave of new enterprise applications as the industry shifts its focus to the corporate and gaming verticals. AR usage in enterprise is on the rise, with smart glasses for gaming forecast to grow by 82% through 2021; VR will see similar crossover into enterprise, with an 88% CAGR through the same period.

Virtual Reality Explores Learning Outside of the Classroom from the Comfort of a School Desk

While consumer-focused verticals like gaming continue to control the virtual reality (VR) landscape, device usage is spiking in education, as the devices foster a more immersive, effective learning environment. ABI Research finds that B2B2C virtual reality device shipments will account for 90% of shipments in the education market vertical.
